Avalanche, Start Here
Updated 2026-10-29
Short answer: Avalanche is a fast blockchain platform whose coin is AVAX. Almost everything you'll use happens on its C-Chain, which works like Ethereum: the same 0x addresses and wallets such as MetaMask or Core. Fees are paid in AVAX.
Three chains in one
- C-Chain: apps, tokens and DeFi. Most exchanges withdraw AVAX here, and our tools read it.
- P-Chain: staking and validators.
- X-Chain: simple transfers of AVAX and assets.
Each has its own address style; when you withdraw from an exchange, choose the C-Chain unless you know you need another.
Staking
You can delegate AVAX to a validator on the P-Chain (at least 25 AVAX, locked for the period you choose), or hold a liquid staking token such as BENQI's sAVAX. Running a validator takes 2,000 AVAX.
Watch out
- Approvals: apps ask permission to spend your tokens. Revoke ones you don't use: how to check and revoke token approvals.
- Fake tokens copying real names; check the contract on the project's site.
- Keep a little AVAX for fees.
