Dogecoin, Start Here
Updated 2026-10-29
Short answer: Dogecoin started as a joke in 2013 and became one of the most widely held cryptocurrencies. Its coin is DOGE. It works much like Bitcoin, with faster blocks (about one a minute) and low fees. Unlike Bitcoin, it has no supply cap: about 5 billion new DOGE are created every year.
Addresses
Dogecoin addresses usually start with D. Like Bitcoin wallets, Dogecoin wallets may give you a new receiving address from time to time; older ones keep working. To see everything in our Portfolio, add each address you use.
Sending and receiving
- Fees are small, paid in DOGE.
- Choose the Dogecoin network when you withdraw from an exchange. DOGE "tokens" on other chains (like DOGE on BNB Chain) are not the same as DOGE on the Dogecoin network.
- Send a small test first when you use a new address.
Watch out
- Celebrity giveaway scams use Dogecoin a lot: "send DOGE, get double back". No one does this.
- Price hype: Dogecoin's price can swing hard on a single post. Only hold what you can afford to see fall.
- Keep your recovery words offline. See seed phrases and hardware wallets.
On Crypto Lighthouse
